As a young boy, I grew up in a small suburb of Ohio learning to love the wild at a young age. I would chase anything that moved, with full intent on catching it to get a better look. I always found a little bit of magic in the lifecycles of aquatic inhabitants. I remember taking mental photographs before I could even comprehend what a camera was. My surroundings always inspired me to go further and try harder to find something new.

As a teen, I found my way west to the Rockies and instantly knew I would never leave. I began to really enjoy the old B&W landscapes and exploration photos. I knew it was something special they had done and it had a tranquil quality, which I found very insightful. I began stealing my dad’s old 35mm and just playing around with it, not really sure of how it even worked – I just loved the feeling of it in my hands. Soon, I began to drive for many miles to see these wonderful places where the iconic images of photography were born.

I drew my first swan tag this year and I must say I was pretty excited about the prospect of hunting one of these magnificent white feathered bombers.

The Tundra Swans' annual migration is almost 4000 miles round trip, stopping over on the marshes of the Great Salt Lake in route to their arctic nesting grounds. Every autumn, upwards of 60,000 individual swans migrate through Utah. What a great opportunity for Utah water fowlers to experience this majestic migratory bird.

Once I got the news that I drew my tag I reached out to my good friend, Scott Russell, to see if he would help fill my tag. Scott has been guiding and hunting waterfowl for a long time and he agreed to help out.
